Leonard Peltier's Response to Ed Woods:
I want to thank you for keeping me informed and yet your last note before 2/06/06 sadly didn’t let me know anything that was kept from me.

I’m glad you liked my supporter’s desire to have my inmate number tattooed on her on the sixth. This was very appropriate and meaningful to me since body art is one of our old traditions. Indeed, patriotic body art has been a long standing tradition among those men and woman who have served, and currently serve, bravely in the military branches that protect our constitutional freedoms. Body art has also been taken up by many prominent people that we all look up to such as U.S. Presidents John F. Kennedy and Gerald R. Ford, Senator Barry Goldwater, Admiral Bill Halsey, King George V of England; celebrities Julia Roberts, Johnny Depp, Angelina Jolie and many others. Doctors and nurses are also getting the caduceus (the medical symbol if you didn’t already know) and firemen are having Dalmatians in fireman’s hats done on them. We surely can look up to the NYFD after 9/11 since they certainly did their job.

Thanks also for thinking about Robert, Dino and myself and since you are a man of prayer, I would like if you could include a few more people to your list when praying. Please pray for the families of the over sixty murders on Pine Ridge that have no convicted murderers along with loved ones of Joe Stuntz and Anna Mae. Also pray for the Vietnamese victims and survivors of My Lai, Wen ho Lee, Richard Jewell, Emad Salem, Joseph Salvati and their families and the families who lost loved ones in Waco Texas. You may also want to pray for H. Paul Rico, John Connolly, and others in the intelligence community who have brought shame on this government, the agencies they served, and this great country by their egregious abuses of power.

I hope I let you in on some things that you aren’t told about. Your friends are habitual in keeping things from people so I want to keep you as informed as I can.

Message from Leonard Peltier - March 18, 2006 Third Anniversary of Iraq Invasion

Message from Leonard Peltier- Times Square New York
Third Anniversary of Iraq Invasion
In New York, demonstrators gathered near Times Square yesterday, to protest the third Anniversary of the United States invasion of Iraq. Protesters gathered on three lanes of Broadway south of 42nd street, and New York Police officers patrolled the avenue while dozens of police officers attempted to keep traffic moving on the street and sidewalk. The demonstrators, bundled against the cold and confined police fences to a two block stretch listened to various speakers from various organizations. Toni Zeidan, of the Leonard Peltier Defense Committee recited the following message from Leonard Peltier:
Message from Leonard Peltier:

"We heard weapons of mass destruction as a reason to attack Iraq and although the basis did not exist, We are still there. I admire our troops but can not sit here and allow our government to continue to use our loyal and courageous men and women. It is time for our troops to come home, to stop our government from withholding evidence, to stop their lies, while innocent people die. The government, in the name of national security, is fighting vigorously to keep long hidden FBI documents from my attorneys. In Buffalo, for example, government attorneys argued that it could not turn over five pages of the FBI file in Buffalo concerning me because disclosure could cause damage to the "national security and the war on transnational terrorism." I, Leonard Peltier will continue to fight to liberate all FBI documents that the government is withholding on national security grounds. Our government uses the words “ national security” and fighting the war on transnational terrorism as a smoke screen to cover up further crimes and misconduct by the FBI as in my case and in the senseless death of the Reservation Murders and those of our troops, children, and family members of innocent victims of the ongoing war in Iraq. I call on Congress and other government officials to bring our troops home and to abide by our Constitution regarding the withholding of documents for the past 30 years. "

MESSAGE FROM LEONARD PELTIER:

Greetings My Relatives:

I say relatives for we are all related in some way. Each year I make statements commemorating the Oglala incident or the anniversary of my imprisonment. Sometimes sitting here in my cell, looking through my glasses, they no longer take the blur away like they once did. I think about the lifetimes I’ve spent behind these walls. Sometimes for a prisoner, it’s like you’ve died to your friends and family. The only difference is that you can talk to them on occasion and sometimes see them. I have spent my life trying to make a difference in the world, for the better. Sometimes someone notices in some way and says thank you for something I was involved with. However my greatest joy comes from someone saying that something I said or was involved with inspired them to be better than they were or seek for themselves to make the world a better place. I remember in my youth that I had a hard time expressing deep feelings but after years of losing friends and relatives who were very close to me, I have come to cherish the opportunity to speak to you even though it be by letter or some other way.

This is the second statement I’ve written today. My first was quite political in nature but after thinking about it I realized most of you get to read the same papers, watch the same news channels that I do. When you’re 30 you can hardly imagine dying. When you’re 61 you know it’s entirely possible and could come anytime. Having said that I want to say a few things from my heart to your heart.

Seek the creator in all the things you do. Cherish your time with one another. Develop your personal self discipline, which is the key to all success. Develop a sense of happiness within you that none can take away. Develop who you are and remain true to your higher self and your integrity will be an inspiration to others. Show your strengths when necessary, even if it is in being gentle or humble. Speak of others in private the same way you would in their presence. Do your best to find the good in all people and stand and speak up against wrong doing. Respect the earth where you stand. Many parts of Mother Earth are also held captive behind concrete and steel. Do your best to recognize inspiration from the Creator and avoid listening to your own, especially when you are tempted in contradiction of your higher values. Never be too proud to say you were wrong or too fearful to stand up for what you know is right. Don’t expect to not get hurt by life, just because you’ve done your best to do what’s right. Especially – don’t lose your sense of humor, even when the laughter is at your own expense.

Life is a learning place. Existence is forever. Challenges are only challenges because life has given you an opportunity to grow in an area of your fear or weakness. Perhaps I’ve talked too much, eh? I want to thank all of you for remembering me. Most of all I want to thank all of you who have chosen to make a difference for the betterment of this world.

I know we don’t all have the same capabilities or resources and I know from experience and history that there will always be those who would commit injustice against others. I know this is the way of things in the past and it will continue in the future. But I also know that if it has touched our hearts to do so, we must each, in our own way, in our own time, be part of the cure against the sicknesses of greed, wealth mongering and nature destruction that faces all mankind. We can’t individually stop it or even collectively, however, we can sure slow it up and, pray to the Creator that his intervention will prevail.

Seriously, know that I love you and that you will be in my prayers. Thirty years ago on February 6th, or March 6th, I would hardly have been able to express these feelings. I thank you for your patience, your time, your support, and your loyalty and for allowing me to share this existence with you. As someone once said, we are all climbing the same mountain, just from different sides.

In the Spirit of Crazy Horse,

Mitakuye oyasin!
