Leonard Peltier Defense Committee - email: info@leonardpeltier.net

Dear friends and affiliated members:
Once again we are planning to have a picnic and vigil for Leonard Peltier on June 26th in London. Please join us on this day to remember all those who died in the Pine Ridge reign of terror in the 1970s resulting in the continued imprisonment of Leonard Peltier and also to give support to the indigenous people of Turtle Island who are still being persecuted to this day.

WHERE:
We will gather in the area around the Fountain of Life adjacent to the Aldford Street North gate in Hyde Park and have an informal picnic and socialising. Please bring your own food and maybe some to share. We will then proceed to the American Embassy in Grosvenor Square for a vigil and the handing in of our petition and letter. If the weather is wet the gathering will be around the covered seating area adjacent to the Brook Street Gate.
WHEN:
June 26th 2007. The picnic will be from 12 noon until just before 2pm and then at the American Embassy from around 2:30pm onwards.
HOW TO GET THERE:
The nearest underground station is Marble Arch (Central Line). Take one of the exits marked for Hyde Park or Park Lane, walk through Speakers Corner and continue down parallel with Park Lane. There are numerous buses that go to this area so just ask for Marble Arch, or Speakers Corner. The nearest parking is in the underground car park on Park Lane (clearly marked) or Pay and Display all around Grosvenor Square.

We will need to notify the police of approximate numbers expected as we may require a police escort. This would give us a higher profile and possibly even media coverage; so could you let us know how many will be attending a.s.a.p. Thank you.
Looking forward to seeing you all there.

" My Life is My Sundance, By Warrior Artist Productions

Please click here to view trailer of “My Life is My Sundance”
http://www.leonardpeltier.net/newsroom.htm

Boulder Museum of Contemporary Art, Theatre13, and Warrior Artists Productions proudly presented the world premiere of the staged adaptation of “Prison Writings: My Life is My Sun Dance” written by imprisoned human rights activist Leonard Peltier with Harvey Arden. The show premiered in March-April 2007 in Boulder, Colorado.

Peltier has been incarcerated for thirty-one years. Many believe that he was unjustly convicted and unfairly imprisoned. Numerous peace activists, Nobel Prize Laureates, celebrities, scholars, legal experts and organizations continue to call for Peltier’s immediate release. Among them, His Holiness the Dalai Lama, Rev. Desmond Tutu, the late Mother Teresa, Nelson Mandela, Robert Redford, Rev. Jessie Jackson, and Coretta Scott King. This list is but a fraction of those who continue to advocate for Peltier’s release.

In 1999 Leonard Peltier published “Prison Writings” a collection of essays, poetry and reflections on more than thirty years of activism from behind prison walls. Peltier’s play is a deeply moving account of one man’s struggle to survive prison life while working for healing, forgiveness and fair treatment within an inherently flawed justice system. Peltier’s words were originally adapted to solo readings by his longtime friend and supporter Harvey Arden and have now been adapted to stage by Harvey Arden, Cathie Quiqley-Soderman, and actor Doug Foote. Audience members describe the production as so profound, so powerful that it brought audiences to tear flowing, stunned silence, standing ovations..

If you are interested in having “ My Life is My Sundance” come to a theatre in your area Please contact Warrior Artists @ worldhope@aol.com or call 302-258-3778.

Oglala Commemoration 2007 Updates

Oglala Commemoration 2007 Updates-

An Army of One:
" We must each be an army of one on the endless struggle between the goodness we are capable of and the evil that threathens us all from without as well as form within. Yes, we can be an army of one. One goodman or one good woman can change the world, can push back the evil, and their work can be a beacon for millions, for billions. Are you that man or woman? If so, may the Great Spirit bless you. If not, why not? We must each of us be that person. That will transform the world overnight. That would be a miracle, yes, but a miracle within our power, our healing power. To heal will require real effort, and a change of heart, from all of us. To heal means that we will begin to look upon one another with respect and tolerance instead of prejudice, distrust, and hatred. We will have to teach our children ----as well as ourselves----to love the diversity of humanity. To heal we will have to make a conscious effort to live as
the Creator intended, as sisters and others, all of one human family, caretakers of this fragile, perishable, and sacred Earth. To heal we will have come to the realization that we are all under a life sentence together...... and there's no chance for parole.
We can do it. yes you and I and all of us together. Now is the time.
Now is the only possible time.
"LET THE GREAT HEALING BEGIN"

Update on April 2007 Worldwide Letter Writing Campaign

Hello Folks,
Your response to our April 2007 worldwide postcard writing campaign to the White House, demanding executive clemency for Leonard Peltier, was enormous! Thank you!!!

We distributed exactly 6,003 campaign cards. And received many messages from you in which you notified us that the cards had been sent. Several people are still sending out the remainder of the cards. If you have any left, don't hesitate. It's not because we're already mid-May, that you have to stop sending these particular postcards.

Was the campaign really a worldwide action? Yes it was! Peltier supporters from the USA, Canada, Belgium, France, Germany, Norway, Finland, Great Britain, Ireland, Sweden, the Netherlands, Turkey and Australia participated. We wished we could have seen that enormous stack of postcards arriving at the White House, day after day! Does it end here? No, of course not. We will have a similar worldwide writing campaign later this year. And, supporters in the USA, please do not forget that there is an LPDC letter writing campaign addressed at your Senators and Representatives regarding the documents which the FBI is still withholding.

See: http://lpdctexas.blogspot.com/2007/03/campaign-to-secure-release-of-leonard.html-----------------

WHAT IS "EXECUTIVE CLEMENCY" ?"Executive clemency" may take several forms, including pardon, commutation of sentence, remission of fine or restitution, and reprieve. The President's clemency power extends only to federal criminal offenses. The Pardon Attorney prepares the recommendation of the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) for the President for final disposition of each application. Executive clemency as regards to Leonard Peltier's case refers to the commutation of his sentence, not a pardon.

A president can decrease the amount of time Leonard Peltier must serve prior to release or immediately release him for time already served. A pardon can only be awarded once a released prisoner has been free and hasn't re-offended for a period of five years. Before leaving office in 2001, then President Bill Clinton did neither approve nor deny a grant of Executive Clemency to Leonard Peltier. He simply opted to do nothing. In 2003, we received a letter from the U.S. Justice Department which acknowledged that Leonard's petition for Executive Clemency is still pending. Even though usually the Attorney General gives his/her recommendations to the President regarding a clemency petition, the authority to grant a commutation of a sentence imposed by a federal court belongs only to the President.

The AttorneyGeneral's recommendation is advisory only. The decision to commute Leonard Peltier's sentence is the President's and the President's alone. There seems to confusion about the timing of awards of Executive Clemency. Many people believe that such awards only occur when a president leaves office. This is not true. For example, President George W. Bush Bush has issued commutations annually since taking office and even former President Bill Clinton awarded clemency at times other than when he left office on January 20, 2001. The timing of such awards also is entirely up to the discretion of the President and may occur on the day he takes office, his last day in office, or any day in between. A two-term President, of course, provides us with even more opportunity. This is all just to say that an active clemency campaign today on Leonard Peltier's behalf is not wasted effort or premature.-----------------

Again, thank you for your support and for participating in this worldwide writing campaign.
